Painting Painting
The painting painting series evolved out of an image of a canvas in a detail of a painting that Philip Guston painted of his studio in the late 60's.The black line that defines and names things is an obvious formal strategy but it serves a conceptual purpose. In the book “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Gabriel García Márquez, there is a plague of forgetfulness in the village of Macondo. All of the citizens begin to forget the names of objects, and to lose the ability to speak to each other. The female protagonist cures the plague by writing the names of everything in the kitchen and the house and labeling them exhaustively so that everyone can communicate with each other. Eventually the plague runs its course, and the village is spared. These paintings are a reflection on painting, and memory.
