whims/All Languages and none-paintings on paper, 2018-2022
Small, often playful works on paper incorporate pattern, bright colors, bold line, and collage elements. The subject matter incorporates observed still-life elements from everyday life, popular culture, politics, dreams, and literary fragments. Language plays a central role in the images: sometimes literally, with words and letters as a part of the visual composition or, more often, just outside of the frame, lengthy titles reach back to insert language into the viewers “read”. Inspired conceptually by Francisco Goya’s series “Los caprichos,” published in 1799, the series pays stylistic homage to the work of Philip Guston and Raymond Pettibon.
